Meet Max Talbot & Mike Carter
“Kip Morales,” Max said, scrolling down the page. “Jesus, his full name is Christopher Mateo Morales Castillo. Can you imagine?”
“Isn’t your full name Maxwell Remington Edgar Talbot?”
Max pressed a hand to his heart. “Aw. You remember my full name.”
“Only because I always thought it was the most pretentious name I’d ever heard.”
Max Talbot and Mike Carter are the main characters in the Polaris Mysteries series. The series is dual POV so we get to live inside both of their heads throughout the book. And boy, oh boy, can that get interesting sometimes.
While there won’t be any major spoilers, if you want to go into A Light in the Darkness with no idea who these characters are or their relationship or dynamic, then I’d suggest backing out of this blog post.
Still here?
Okay. Great!
Max and Carter have known each other since elementary school. They both grew up in Willow Haven, North Carolina, but in different parts of town. Max’s family comes from old money and his father is the mayor whereas Carter comes from a family of farmers.
Carter grew up thinking Max was an over privileged brat who never took anything serious. While they were never friends, due to living in a small town, their paths mingled many times. Particularly because Max’s family bought him a horse and insisted he take riding lessons from the only riding stable in town—Mike Carter’s family’s ranch.
If you would like to read more about what a debacle it was when Carter’s father told him to be Max’s personal horse groom, you can receive the short story for free by signing up for my newsletter here!
Whereas Carter is more laid back, patient, and calm (except whenever Max is around), Max is reckless, loud, and unchecked. And given just about everything Max does rubs Carter the wrong way and makes him shed that relaxed exterior just a little bit more, things are about to get really interesting when they’re forced to work together to solve a murder.
